Florida
International University is one of 10 state universities in the Florida University
System. Over the last twenty-five years, FIU's enrollment has grown to over 30,000
students, with a graduate enrollment of over 6000. The Board of Regents authorized
the University to begin offering doctoral programs in 1983. Improving the quality
of all of our graduate programs while attracting students from around the world
are important University priorities. This report addresses many of the issues
that are critical to our achieving these goals.
The
Undergraduate Education Task Force, charged with examining "those challenges
and opportunities which will impact undergraduate education at FIU in the next
five years and asked to make "recommendations on steps to amplify the
quality of the undergraduate educational experience, met on a regular basis,
both as a whole and in smaller subcommittees throughout the Spring 1999 semester.
In addition, we held an open forum on each campus to which all members of the
university community were invited to come and raise their concerns and offer suggestions.
Both forums were well attended and productive; issues raised here shaped the Task
Forces subsequent discussions and procedures.
